Fairmont Banff Springs, one of the most iconic luxury hotels in Canada, stands as a towering Scottish-inspired castle nestled in the heart of Banff National Park. This stunning property has been welcoming guests since 1888, offering a combination of historic elegance, breathtaking mountain views, and premium service. But is it worth the high price tag?

The Journey to Banff Springs
My journey began with a flight into Calgary International Airport, followed by a scenic hour-and-a-half drive to Banff. As I entered the picturesque town and caught sight of the Fairmont Banff Springs, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the towering structure. Nestled between two rivers and surrounded by the Canadian Rockies, the hotel’s castle-like presence is awe-inspiring.
Built in 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the original structure suffered a devastating fire in 1926. The iconic tower we see today was built soon after, and the hotel has since hosted notable dignitaries, including King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and several Canadian prime ministers. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national historic landmark, this property holds rich historical significance.
Room and Pricing: Is Fairmont Gold Worth It?
During my stay, I booked a standard King Fairmont Gold room, which comes with exclusive perks and services. The Gold experience at Fairmont Banff Springs offers a step above traditional rooms, including access to a private concierge and lounge areas that serve food and drinks throughout the day.
Despite my past reservations about Fairmont properties, my room genuinely exceeded my expectations. Following a $30 million renovation in 2021, the rooms received a much-needed facelift, blending modern touches of luxury with historical charm. Although compact due to the age of the building, my room featured sleek finishes, a stocked coffee bar, and an incredible mountain view.
However, it’s important to note that prices for these Gold rooms aren’t cheap. During my winter visit, the rate was $835 CAD ($620 USD), including taxes and resort fees. That said, during peak tourist seasons in the summer, prices for a Gold room can climb as high as $1,600 CAD per night.
The Gold Experience: Private Lounges and Exquisite Dining
Fairmont Gold guests have access to two lounges on the upper floors of the main tower. The first lounge is perfect for quiet reading, while the second serves breakfast, evening hors d’oeuvres, and beverages throughout the day. The selection of premium food in these lounges was top-notch, from smoked salmon and hot breakfast items to delicious evening spreads that easily doubled as dinner. The only downside? Alcoholic drinks came at an additional charge.
For those willing to explore beyond the lounges, Fairmont Banff Springs offers several dining options. From the Italian-inspired Castello Italiana to the fine dining experience at 1888 Chop House, the hotel has a range of cuisine—though pricey. For example, an 8-ounce filet mignon at 1888 Chop House costs around $70 CAD. Even the more casual sandwich options in the lobby café hover around $16-20 CAD. While reviews of the food are overwhelmingly positive, be prepared to spend quite a bit on dining.
Activities at Fairmont Banff Springs
Fairmont Banff Springs isn’t just a hotel—it’s a gateway to adventure. The property offers everything from guided nature walks and wine tastings to more thrilling excursions like helicopter rides, ATV tours, and white-water rafting. These come at a hefty price, but the resort does include some perks in the daily resort fee, such as equipment rentals, pool access, and transportation to local attractions like the Whyte Museum.
If you’re a fan of skiing or hiking, Banff is a treasure trove of outdoor activities. For free or low-cost excursions, the hotel is located near Bow Falls and Sulphur Mountain, where guests can hike or take the gondola up to soak in the mountain vistas.
Verdict: Is It Worth It?
Fairmont Banff Springs is an iconic piece of Canadian history with a price to match its reputation. The stunning location, combined with luxurious accommodations, makes it an unforgettable experience. While the price is undeniably steep, especially during peak tourist seasons, the hotel’s service, stunning views, and rich history provide plenty of reasons to consider it for a special occasion.
For travelers looking to explore Banff without breaking the bank, there are more affordable options nearby, like the Moose Hotel or Mount Royal Hotel. However, if you want to immerse yourself in the opulent history and natural beauty of one of Canada’s most famous landmarks, Fairmont Banff Springs delivers an experience you won’t soon forget.
