The journey of crossing the US-Mexico border, commonly referred to as the “Donkey Process,” has long been a topic of intrigue. In this blog, we explore the experiences of individuals attempting to navigate this controversial passage between the two countries. From scaling walls to the stark contrasts between legal and illegal crossings, this article delves into the realities of border-crossing, as narrated by someone who witnessed it firsthand.
Behind the Wall: A First-Person Account
Standing in the United States, one can clearly see the wall separating Mexico and the U.S., a symbolic and physical barrier that many have attempted to cross. From the American side, the border stretches, some places reinforced with walls, others wide open, exposing rugged terrain. A striking observation was that not all parts of the border are fortified, leaving some areas less guarded and easier for people to pass through. Maybe even signifying that there might be a glimmer of hope for those who attempt the arduous trek.
As our narrator journeyed toward El Paso, Texas, the wall loomed large in some parts, but in others, it disappeared entirely. Driving along the I-10 highway, they observed the stark differences in border security, noting areas where no physical barriers or patrol officers were present. This is where some cross using what is known in India as the “Donkey Process.” Or what they call in Hindi the ‘Dunki’
What Is the Donkey Process aka Dunki?
Dunki the word is actually derived from the phrase in Punjabi or Hindi in which to jump or hop from place to place. It is made famous by the recent film on Netflix called Dunki (directed by Rajkumar Harani and starring Shah Ruk Khan) which is a Hindi comedy drama based on the characters’ attempt to navigate through the treacherous immigration borders.
This process often refers to the practice of crossing multiple countries before reaching the Mexican border, only to scale the U.S. border wall. While many focus on the idea of simply jumping the wall, it’s far more complex. The term encapsulates the struggles and dangers individuals may face as they cross deserts, rivers, and foreign terrain. Once they reach the border, many leave their belongings and most treasured objects behind—clothes, food packages, and other essentials—marking their passage comes with huge sacrifices.
For many, the attempt to cross the border is an act of desperation and determination. The dangers don’t just come from the wall or the terrain, but also from border patrol officers, robbers, and even fellow migrants. Stories of people being robbed or detained by authorities are common, and some even risk being caught by human traffickers.
Navigating the Border Legally
Our narrator also sheds light on the current plight of legal border crossings. Armed with the proper documentation, such as a visa or a passport, the process becomes much smoother. However, not everyone has that luxury. During the trip, they noted that entering Mexico required only a small fee of 50 cents per person, but things became more complex on the way back into the U.S. Passports were inspected, questions were asked, and security was tight.
While waiting at the border, the experience of crossing on foot was entirely new to them. In contrast to previous crossings by vehicle, they found it fascinating yet daunting. Despite speaking English, the narrator encountered challenges with the Spanish-speaking locals, relying on translators to communicate. And still finding it hard to navigate through the language barrier.
The Hidden Risks of the Journey
Throughout their experience, the narrator reflected on the courage and determination of those attempting illegal crossings. From avoiding border patrols to dealing with the constant threat of being caught, it’s a dangerous game. While they had the advantage of visas and passports, others did not, risking everything for the hope of a better life across the border.
In one particular moment, they came across a border patrol truck keeping a close watch. The officers were aware of their presence and likely thought they might attempt to cross illegally. While the narrator was simply documenting the experience, the tension was palpable.
Conclusion: A Complex and Dangerous Journey
Crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, whether legally or illegally, is always fraught with unforeseen challenges. The Donkey Process, while often spoken about in abstract terms, is a very real, dangerous, and sometimes heartbreaking experience for those involved. This video journal has offered a glimpse into both the legal and illegal sides of this journey, shedding light on the motivations, dangers, and intricacies of crossing the border.
For those who legally cross with proper documentation, the process is relatively straightforward. But for those risking everything through the Dunki, it’s a long, arduous road filled with uncertainty.
