“Don’t Be That Person”: Cruise Ship Behaviors That Will Get You Kicked Off (and a Few Surprises)

by Author

Cruise are dreamy adventures – a chance to unwind, explore new horizons, and enjoy endless entertainment. But, as with any community, life aboard a cruise ship means following certain rules. While it’s rare to be kicked off a cruise, certain actions could land you in hot water with the captain and crew, potentially cutting your vacation short with a one-way ticket home (and no refund). If you’re curious about the “do’s and absolutely don’t’s,” read on!

1. Bringing Illegal Substances

Let’s start with an obvious one. Cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, strictly prohibit any form of illegal drugs – even medical marijuana, regardless of where it’s legal. Since cruise ships follow the laws of the countries they visit, marijuana is a no-go, even if it’s allowed back home. Possession of controlled substances could result in immediate disembarkation and, sometimes, legal consequences depending on the port country.

2. Dangerous or Disruptive Behavior

Think you can throw punches on the pool deck? Think again. Any behavior that threatens the safety or well-being of others can get you into trouble fast. From entering restricted areas to starting fights or damaging property, engaging in dangerous antics is a sure way to get a one-way trip to the next port. And don’t expect a refund!

The captain and crew have a wide range of actions they can take – from confining you to your cabin to having you cool off in the ship’s holding cell (yes, cruise ships have a brig). Physical altercations, harassment of other guests, or tampering with ship equipment can lead to fines, detainment, and possible permanent bans from the cruise line. Simply put, keep it courteous!

3. Violating Health Protocols

Although most COVID-19 measures have relaxed, every cruise line still reserves the right to enforce health protocols if needed. Should a health emergency arise, passengers could face quarantine, confinement, or even mandatory disembarkation to prevent illness from spreading. While health precautions may vary, policies remain in place to keep everyone safe – and it’s best to respect them.

4. Romantic Relationships with Crew Members

While cruise guests are encouraged to socialize, getting romantically involved with a crew member is strictly off-limits. This isn’t only a rule for passengers; crew members can also face job termination for violating this policy. The reasoning is simple: crew members represent the cruise line, and it’s important for them to maintain professionalism. So if you’re hoping for a shipboard romance, keep it among fellow guests.

5. Ignoring Safety Briefings and Evacuation Drills (Unique Rule!)

Here’s one you might not expect: skipping out on mandatory safety briefings or evacuation drills. While it may seem like a minor offense, missing these sessions could land you in trouble. Safety drills are crucial to the well-being of everyone on board, ensuring that all passengers know what to do in an emergency. Failing to attend not only puts you at risk but can inconvenience the crew. In extreme cases, repeat offenses could even lead to disembarkation. Show up, pay attention, and remember – the crew takes these protocols seriously.

Why It Pays to Follow Cruise Rules

For most cruisers, these situations are rare. As long as you respect the guidelines, follow instructions, and avoid any “pot-stirring” behavior, your cruise should be smooth sailing. A little mindfulness goes a long way in ensuring everyone’s safety and comfort. So, relax, enjoy, and don’t be the person who becomes a cautionary tale!
