Asia’s Best City?! Night Markets, Bubble Tea, and the Presidential Palace

by Author

If you’ve got a day in Taipei, you’re in for a whirlwind of unforgettable experiences, vibrant city lights, and a chance to explore Asia’s heartbeat! In just 24 hours, I tackled three big goals: savoring Taipei’s most outrageous street food, making three new local friends, and – believe it or not – attempting to meet Taiwan’s president! Buckle up as we dive into this journey filled with food, culture, and a bit of presidential mystery!

Goal #1: Find the Craziest Street Food in Taipei

First stop? Shilin Night Market, where Taipei’s energy is so alive it practically hums. The food stalls stretch as far as you can see, each one more tempting than the last. From stinky tofu to sizzling fried chicken, I dove right in! Bubble tea (a must in its birthplace, right?) was on the agenda, and it lived up to its sugary hype. Then, came a truly bizarre snack: snails! One chewy bite later, I could feel the adventurous spirit of Taiwan welcoming me in.

Travel Tip: If you’re in Taipei, get ready for sensory overload – in the best way possible. The aroma of fried foods, the neon lights, and the people queuing for everything, from bubble tea to fortune-telling with birds, make this an experience like no other.

Goal #2: Make New Taiwanese Friends

In Taipei, meeting locals is as easy as waiting in line for bubble tea! I met Jay and Diana, who were excited to share some Taiwanese food wisdom with me. Together, we braved the infamous stinky tofu. Spoiler: it’s pungent and unforgettable – like cheese on steroids! And then, a surprise encounter led me to Charlie, who introduced me to a fortune teller whose predictions are hand-picked by birds! When in Taiwan, right?

Goal #3: Meet the President

The grand finale of my day led me to the Presidential Office Building, a place steeped in Taiwan’s history and prestige. With its rich Japanese colonial architecture and sweeping views of Taipei 101, just being here felt like a dream. Though the president herself was busy, her team was kind enough to give me and my friend Diana a guided tour – complete with a Michelin-star dinner to end our day!

The dinner? An eight-course feast featuring lobster, goose feet, and a dreamy dessert that tasted like cookies-and-cream ice cream. Every bite of this meal felt like a tribute to Taiwan’s love for both street and fine dining.
